▾   Who can use the symptom assessment tool?

The online symptom assessment is for anyone 18 months and older who is not pregnant. If you need symptom assessment for someone who is pregnant or younger than 18 months old, please call the Ask Mayo Clinic nurse line at 855-669-7712.


▾   How does the symptom assessment work?

Select a symptom from the list on the home page to start your symptom assessment. You'll then be asked three demographic questions:
1. Who is the assessment for—either yourself or someone else
2. Date of birth
3. Gender

Age and gender are required to personalize assessment questions and to deliver appropriate health guidance. After you've entered demographic information, you'll be asked a series of questions about symptoms. Remember that if the assessment is for someone else, all of your answers should be about that person’s symptoms.

At the end of the assessment, you'll receive recommendations to help you decide the appropriate level of care. For example, manage symptoms at home or make an appointment with a health care provider. You'll also receive home care information to help you better manage an illness or injury.


▾   Why am I asked about emergency symptoms when I only have a minor health concern?

At the beginning of the symptom assessment, we ask about emergency symptoms to rule out life-threatening conditions. We do this so people who have emergency symptoms are promptly directed to seek immediate medical care.


▾   I'm not sure how to answer a question. Where can I get help?

Nurses are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist you. They can review information you provided online, help you complete the assessment and answer your questions. Click the Need help from a nurse? link on the right side of the page for nurse contact information.


▾   Can I print and save my results?

Click Print on the results page to print the recommendations and health information. You can save this printed page as a PDF document using Adobe Acrobat software. Consult Adobe Acrobat product support for instructions on saving documents in a PDF format.
